The Do's and Don'ts of Evangelization

December 5, 2022 | NEW METHODS

Do lead with love! As Christians we go and share God’s love with others, not only because we love God but because we when we love another person, we desire their greatest good. Being with God is the greatest good anyone can achieve. Let your love of God and others motivate your evangelization efforts. Above all, let your love for one another be intense, because love covers a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:8

Don’t attack! Attacking another person’s beliefs or practices can stop the discussion before it has started. While you may have very strong justified opinions and facts to support your reasoning, attacking another’s beliefs or practices before establishing trust will most certainly close the door to possible evangelizing efforts.

If possible, on your part, live at peace with all. Romans 12:18

Do be a person of prayer! Our relationship with God through our prayer directly effects our ability to lead others to Him, not only in speaking of our relationship with Him but also in our prayer for the one to be evangelized.

Let us call upon him today, firmly rooted in prayer, for without prayer all our activity risks being fruitless and our message empty. Jesus wants evangelizers who proclaim the good news not only with words, but above all by a life transfigured by God’s presence. Joy of the Gospel 259

Don’t be too busy for prayer! Many people cite busyness as an excuse for not spending time with God, yet He desires to have a personal relationship with every person. Do not let us become so wrapped up in the things of this life where we forget the most important part of this life…our relationship with God.

Yet the world and its enticement are passing away. But whoever does the will of God remains forever.

1 John 2:17

Do share your witness! Each person can speak their own story. One important tool for evangelization is a Christian’s personal witness to how God has moved in their life.

All of us are called to offer others an explicit witness to the saving love of the Lord, who despite our imperfections offers us his closeness, his word and his strength, and gives meaning to our lives. In your heart you know that it is not the same to live without him; what you have come to realize, what has helped you to live and given you hope, is what you also need to communicate to others.

Joy of Gospel Paragraph 121

Don’t be silent! God calls each of us to share His love with others.

Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope.

1 Peter 3:15

Do invite! If you’ve encountered the Lord and He is the center of your universe and the love of your life, then you want others to share in the wonderful joy you’ve experienced through your relationship with God. Don’t be afraid to extend the invitation.

The primary reason for evangelizing is the love of Jesus which we have received, the experience of salvation which urges us to ever greater love of him. What kind of love would not feel the need to speak of the beloved, to point him out, to make him known? If we do not feel an intense desire to share this love, we need to pray insistently that he will once more touch our hearts. We need to implore his grace daily, asking him to open our cold hearts and shake up our lukewarm and superficial existence.

Joy of the Gospel 264

Don’t wait for people to show up on their own! In a world full of pain and suffering, Christians cannot afford to sit on the sidelines and simple hope people will show up to experience the opportunity the Church offers them. Many people need someone to invite them into an encounter and a companion to walk the journey which, for many, is unknown and scary.

What we have seen and heard we proclaim now to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; for our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ1 John 1:3

Do be patient! Conversion of a soul is the work of the Lord. We can set the stage, provide for an encounter, pray, sacrifice, and invite others, but ultimately the work of evangelization is done through the Holy Spirit who generously invites us to participate in fostering a friendship between Him and others.

No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day. John 6:44

Don’t be pushy! God gives each of us the gift of free will. We must respect another’s decision to abandon an invitation to a relationship with the Lord. This does not mean one cannot continue to gently invite, but we must lead with love which will soften every gentle nudge in the direction of the Lord.

But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait with endurance. Romans 8:25
