Who Should Evangelize?

December 19, 2022 | NEW MINDS

Many people think evangelization, also known as sharing the faith, is the responsibility of the clergy and those who are employed by the Catholic Church. This is a huge misconception and could be contributing to many people leaving the Church everyday. Some go to other faiths, but many people leave and have no connection to God once they leave. This is a tragedy, not only for the soul who has abandoned their faith but also for the Church.

Let’s first clear up the misconception about the role of evangelization. It is the responsibility of every single baptized person to share their faith with others.

He said to them, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.”

Mark 10:15

Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.

Matthew 5:16

But you will receive power when the holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem,  throughout Judea and Samaria,  and to the ends of the earth.”

Acts 1:8

By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.

John 15:8

The clergy and church employees may never have contact with your loved ones, but God has put those you love in direct contact with you and your witness to His love and movement in your life. Every person who walks in your path is a person who can be touched by your witness of faith.

"Today, as the Church seeks to experience a profound missionary renewal, there is a kind of preaching which falls to each of us as a daily responsibility. It has to do with bringing the Gospel to the people we meet, whether they be our neighbours or complete strangers. This is the informal preaching which takes place in the middle of a conversation, something along the lines of what a missionary does when visiting a home. Being a disciple means being constantly ready to bring the love of Jesus to others, and this can happen unexpectedly and in any place: on the street, in a city square, during work, on a journey."

Joy of the Gospel Paragraph 127

Many people do not know where to begin or fear the conversation may head into a debate or they fear not knowing enough. There are strategies to combat fear of not knowing enough. Begin with prayer. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you with the words and the timing for when to speak. It is important to first listen to reasons for their decisions about the faith. Once you’ve respectfully and patiently listened, then you can begin to ease into sharing your witness of God’s love in your life and why you express the return of God’s love through the Catholic faith. Once trust has been established, you can move into the baby steps of invitation, always inviting one into deeper relationship with God.

The laity of the Church has been given the missionary mandate by Jesus to go and make disciples. Every baptized soul has been given the gift of the Holy Spirit to assist in this work and every lost soul needs courageous Catholics to help them find their way to God.
